New collaboration between NIHS and UNIGE marks a major step forward in bioactive natural product chemistry

NIHS’ ability to access and implement the most recent developments in the field of bioactive natural product chemistry, analysis and pharmacokinetics has taken a major step forward with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Geneva (UNIGE).

The University – and more specifically, its School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (EPGL) – is internationally renowned for its scientific research, particularly in the field of pharmaceutical sciences.

The MoU is the culmination of several years of scientific interactions between the two organisations, which has already resulted in an EPGL-NIHS scientific symposium back in 2015 and the attraction of  post-doctoral researchers from UNIGE to NIHS.

Moving forward, initial research priorities include such areas as analytical techniques for natural products in extracts, cells and biological fluids, computational and biophysical experimental tools for bioactive protein interactions, and in vitro biological models.

“This latest collaboration provides solid scientific support to our work and offers a considerable increase in our capacity for identifying bioactives from food and natural extracts, as the University’s phytochemistry and analytical chemistry teams are world leaders in their fields”, explains Denis Barron, Head of Natural Bioactives and Screening at NIHS.

Additional areas of collaboration in the biomedical sciences field will be explored in the future with various departments of UNIGE.

About NIHS:

NIHS is a biomedical research institute, part of Nestlé’s global R&D network, dedicated to fundamental research aimed at understanding health and disease and developing science-based, targeted nutritional solutions for the maintenance of health. To achieve its aim, NIHS employs state-of-the-art technologies and biological models to characterize health and disease with a holistic and integrated approach. The ultimate goal of the Institute is to develop knowledge that can empower people to better maintain their health through nutritional approaches, especially in relation to their molecular profile and lifestyle status.
