Les chaires UNESCO en sciences exactes et naturelles se mobilisent pour le développement durable

Le réseau de chaires UNESCO spécialisées en sciences exactes et naturelles se rassemble à Genève, du 5 au 7 juillet 2017, afin d’unir leurs efforts pour la mise en œuvre du Programme de développement durable à l’horizon 2030, adopté par le Nations unies en 2015. C’est la première fois qu’une telle réunion est organisée.

Les 172 chaires UNESCO et réseaux UNITWIN spécialisés en sciences ont en effet un rôle important à jouer, en tant que constructeurs de ponts entre la communauté scientifique, les décideurs et la société.

L’objectif de la réunion consistera notamment à définir un «Jalon de Genève» (Geneva Milestone), pour guider l’amélioration de la coopération entre les chaires, l’UNESCO et le système des Nations Unies.

La conférence est organisée par l’UNESCO avec le soutien du Département fédéral des affaires étrangères, en collaboration avec l’Université de Genève et l’École Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne.

La cérémonie d’ouverture aura lieu à l’Université de Genève le 5 juillet, en présence d’Irina Bokova, directrice générale de l’UNESCO; Yves Flückiger, recteur de l’Université de Genève ; Fabiola Gianotti, directrice générale du CERN ; Krystyna Marty, secrétaire d'Etat-adjointe du Département fédéral des affaires étrangères; et Andreas Mortensen, vice-président pour la recherche de l’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne.

Mobilising UNESCO Chairs in Natural Sciences for Policy Action towards the 2030 Agenda

UNESCO’s network of Chairs and Networks specialized in the Natural Sciences are meeting in Geneva, on 05-07 July 2017 to unite their efforts towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This conference marks the first meeting of the UNESCO Chairs and Networks in the Natural Sciences.

The 172 UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks that are specialized in science have indeed an important role to play, as bridge builders between the scientific community, decision makers and society.

The main objective of the gathering is to define the “Geneva Milestone”, an outcome document to improve cooperation between Chairs, UNESCO and the United Nations System in order to strengthen the contribution of science, technology and innovation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The conference is organized by UNESCO with the kind support of Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Université de Genève, CERN and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Université de Genève on 5 July, with the participation of Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO; Yves Flückiger, Rector of the University of Geneva; Fabiola Gianotti, Director-General of CERN; Krystyna Marty, Deputy State Secretary of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs; and Andreas Mortensen, Vice-President for Research, Ecole Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne.
