Richard Preston écrit aussi régulièrement pour The New Yorker.

«Emerging Monsters?
A Journalist in the World of Viruses»

Conference In English - en anglais, traduction simultanée

Emerging Viruses: these words alone, evoke mysterious threats and unknown illnesses that can strike anytime, anywhere. Ebola, MERS, Zika are strange names that have the power to sow panic throughout the affected areas, of course, but also far beyond, on the web and in the media. In such health crises, journalists constitute crucial go-betweens for doctors, researchers, international health agencies, communities as well as for the general public. Not only they decipher the language of science and bring a historical dimension to these outbreaks, but their mission is also to witness of their own experience as that of the people struck by these new monsters. Richard Preston is a journalist and has been writing on infectious diseases for many years. In his lecture, he will lead the audience into the world of emerging viruses and tell about his encounters with the scientists and physicians who struggle to protect the human population from these threats. Drawing from the past and present history of Ebola and of other emerging viruses, he will describe some of the most colourful moments of his career. A dive into a world both terrifying and exciting.

Richard Preston is a bestselling author of nine books, including The Hot Zone, The Demon in the Freezer, and The Wild Trees, whose works reveal hidden worlds of nature and wonder.  He is a recognized master of nonfiction writing, and his books have been published in more than 35 languages.  Preston is a contributor to the The New Yorker; all of his nonfiction books have first begun as articles there. Preston has won a number of awards, including the National Magazine Award and the American Institute of Physics science-writing award, and he’s the only non-physician to receive the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s Champion of Prevention award. An asteroid has been named for him.  (Preston is a ball of rock 5 kilometers in diameter that could some day slam into the Earth or Mars.) Currently he is the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies at Princeton University.  He lives near Princeton with his wife Michelle; they have three children. Richard Preston is currently writing a sequel to The Hot Zone.
