The Geneva Centre for Philanthropy & ethos
are delighted to invite you to the Philanthropy Lunch:

Engage or Exclude: What is the best way
to align investments with mission?

12:00 - 2:00 pm | Uni Bastions,
room B111
Doors open at 11:45 am

In order to be consistent, philanthropic foundations should mirror their mission in their asset management strategies. This is often not the case. The past decades have seen a steady rise in passive investments. Replicating the performance of indexes, these strategies benefit from low management fees, but they mostly ignore philanthropic goals and values. This is why ESG indexes have been increasingly created, for instance by ethos.

The exclusion of controversial companies is however not the only way to align asset management and mission pursuance, and to mitigate operational or reputational risks. Active ownership strategies are increasingly an alternative. Can and should both be cumulatively applied? How, when and with which time horizon? And what is the impact on performance? To which extent are companies sensitive to investors engagement and why do some of them implement long term ESG strategies? After short presentations, the panel will exchange views around these issues with the aim of identifying the most efficient way to foster both financial and mission performance.
