New Read and Publish license with Elsevier

After several months of anticipation, swissuniversities' negotiations with the publisher Elsevier came to a successful conclusion on June 14, 2024, with the signing of a new "Read & Publish" agreement for the period 2024-2028.

This contract now fully meets the requirements of the swissuniversities’ negotiation mandate. In addition to covering both the consultation of articles in the publisher's journals (Read) and open access publication in those same journals (Publish), it features two key changes:

  • Improved conditions for publishing in open access journals: The agreement offers unlimited and free of charge open access publishing in over 2,500 of the publisher's journals. This portfolio now also includes the Cell Press and The Lancet journal series. Only some journals from learned societies are excluded.
  • A framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) favorable to scientific research on the publisher's publications: All AI tools can be used to analyze open access content under “CC BY” licenses. Restrictions, however, apply to subscription-based publications. These publications can only be used to train AI models under strict conditions. In such cases, we recommend contacting the team at openaccess(at)unige.ch.

.A regularly updated web page lists the agreements concluded with publishers offering advantageous Open Access publication conditions for the institution's researchers.
