Conférence "Strengthening the Protection of Civilians: Challenges of Contemporary Armed Conflicts"
Mara Tignino speaks at the conference "Strengthening the Protection of Civilians: Challenges of Contemporary Armed Conflicts."
This international event, organized by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Slovenia, under the auspices of the President of Slovenia, takes place at the Faculty of Social Sciences on June 11 and 12 in Ljubljana.
The conference marks significant anniversaries:
- 160 years since the First Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick in Armed Forces in the Field,
- 75 years since the adoption of the four Geneva Conventions, and
- 70 years since the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its First Protocol.
“As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Slovenia pays special attention to the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, which is of the utmost importance in view of the unprecedented number of complex and recurrent armed conflicts we are witnessing today.” Republic of Slovenia, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
Five panels explore key topics in international humanitarian law, emphasizing civilian protection in modern armed conflicts. The event starts with a high-level panel discussion on the importance of the Geneva Conventions in today's intricate, frequent, and urbanized conflicts, followed by four expert panels:
- Protection of civilians and cultural heritage in besieged cities,
- Cyberattacks on civilian critical infrastructure,
- Protecting civilians from misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in armed conflict, and
- Ensuring accountability for violations of international humanitarian law
