The University of Geneva team places second in the European final of the WTO pleading competition ‘ELSA WTO MOOT COURT COMPETITION (EMC2)’ and qualifies for the world final at the WTO.

The University of Geneva team placed second in the European final of the WTO pleading competition EMC2, in Warsow, Poland, March 26-30, 2014. Of the 107 teams from all over the world in the competition, the University of Geneva team qualified as one of the 14 teams selected for the world final, to be held in the middle of May at the WTO in Geneva.

The EMC2 aims at promoting the knowledge of international trade law and of the WTO dispute settlement system. It pits competing students in a fictional trial based on a case study. An initial selection is made on the basis of written submissions (complainants/respondents) redacted by the participating teams. The regional round final then selects its three best teams for the world final, to take place May 13-18, 2014, at the WTO in Geneva.

After months of preparation under the guidance of team-coach Ms Julia Motte-Baumvol, post-doctoral assistant at the Law Faculty, the Geneva team qualified for the world final. In the regional final, the team benefited from stimulating interactions with a panel composed of international experts, including Ms Marisa Goldstein (Judicial affairs of the WTO), Ms Xiaolu Zhu (Appelate Body of the WTO), Mr Jan Yves Remy (Sidley Austin LLP), Professor Lorand Bartels (University de Cambridge) and Ms Charlotte Sieber-Gasser (World Trade Institute).

The support of the University of Geneva and the financial help of external sponsors, the law firms Sidley Austin LLP, Lalive and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, were deciding factors in the team’s success. At the Law Faculty of the University of Geneva, the ELSA WTO Moot Court is recognized as a facultative seminary worth 18 ECTS credits, under the direction of Professor Gabrielle Marceau.
