PAUL ROBERTSON

Professor Paul Robertson is a founding member and, for more than twenty-five years, leader of the internationally acclaimed Medici String Quartet. For the last fifteen years Paul Robertson has also pursued a keen interest in connections between science and music, with a particular interest in the brain sciences. His research has led him into the field of modern neurology where he has developed a new concept of how music and the brain function, co-relate and synthesise. He frequently gives lectures, seminars, broadcasts and interviews on this subject.

This unique exploration led him to present the highly praised television series for Channel Four Television entitled Music and the Mind. Koch International released three CDs to accompany the series.

Since these programmes Paul Robertson has increasingly combined a successful international concert career with a programme of public lectures in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and Canada. Recent invitations have included presentations to The Medical Society of London; The Royal Society of Psychiatry; the Geneva Hôpital Cantonal; the Copenhagen Academic Medical Centre and University; the Amsterdam Medical Centre (presented together with the Medici Quartet in the Great Hall of the Concertgebouw); the annual conference of the American Society of Neuro-radiology and the Northern Ireland Curriculum Council - Arts in Education colloquiem.

Paul Robertson is currently Visiting Professor of Music and Psychiatry at Kingston University (Department of Education) and at Bournemouth University. The Medici String Quartet are Quartet in Residence at the University of Surrey.
