Abstract

This project focuses on the confrontation of the population with contamination owing to the Chernobyl catastrophe, and with the measures taken to mitigate its adverse effects. It aims to investigate what are the acceptable living conditions in the contaminated areas, mainly through keeping the population involved in this process.

In order to take into account field constraints, the research will follow a pragmatic approach, consisting in two phases :

First an analytical phase : on one hand, an interdisciplinary desk study aims to identify and analyse the public information, communication and education programmes existing in the concerned Republics, as well as the global situation and local frame. On the other hand a field's social enquiry will elucidate peoples' representations.

Then an operational phase will elaborate, implement, and evaluate an experimental pilot-program taking in account the constraints on the base on the first results, in order to formulate tested strategies for public information, communication and education.
