How to promote learning in school
Which teaching practices should teachers adopt to promote learning among all students? The present book aims to contribute to answering this question by presenting a critical review of research on professional teaching skills, highlighting their theoretical foundations and impacts.
The professional teaching gestures proposed in this book are grouped into five major categories:
- The first chapter examines ways of taking into account student heterogeneity within the same class, through pedagogical differentiation.
- The second chapter looks at the development of students' psychosocial skills.
- The third chapter looks at students' executive functions and attentional abilities.
- The fourth chapter looks at the ways in which feedback is formulated and taken into account, focusing on the self-regulatory processes involved in learning.
- The fifth chapter explores professional teaching gestures that promote transfer of knowledge, such as identifying students' prior knowledge, relying on analogical transfer or using metacognitive strategies.
