Size Does Matter: Importance of Large Bubbles and Small-Scale Hot Spots for Methane Transport
Methane bubble release from freshwater sediments is the most efficient pathway for atmospheric release of this important greenhouse gas. Due to their variable nature, however, the methane gas fluxes are often difficult to accurately quantify. Here, we detail a hydroacoustic method to measure methane bubble fluxes from the sediment, and illustrate the importance of local hotspots and large bubbles on atmospheric methane emissions from a shallow Swiss reservoir.
