A summer school was organized at Lake Baikal on "Lake ecosytems under pressure: processes and impacts"
Under the auspices of the Leading House for bilateral cooperation between Switzerland and Russia, a summer school was organized at Lake Baikal on "Lake ecosytems under pressure: processes and impacts" from August 21st to 31st, 2015. Organised by V. Slaveykova and JL Loizeau from the University of Geneva, and A. Matveev, T. Lichtovannaya and M. Timofeyev from the Irkutsk State University, the school was attended by nearly 60 students and teachers from Swiss universities (Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Basel, EPFL, ETHZ), Russian (Universities State of Irkutsk, Yaroslavl, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Vladivostok and Ulan-Ude, and the Academy of Sciences), and other countries (Universities of Savoie Mont Blanc, France; Kiel, Germany; Tartu, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland).
The school was held in the Biological Research Station of the Irkutsk State University at Bolshie Koty. The program was structured in three main time with: in the morning presentations and lectures on the processes and impacts of anthropogenic pressures on large lake ecosystems;
in the afternoon practical work or field trips, devoted to geology, water chemistry, biology, and management of coastal ecosystems of Lake Baikal;
and in the evening the students worked in groups, supervised by a “mentor”, to prepare an oral presentation based on a synthesis of several scientific articles.
