Master of Arts in Conference Interpreting
The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting awards a Master of Arts in Conference Interpreting with a full range of courses in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
To be admitted to the Master of Arts in Conference Interpreting programme, you must meet the registration requirements of the University of Geneva and hold a university degree. In addition, you must pass the written and oral entrance examinations (see art. 9 of the Faculty Study Regulations), thereby demonstrating a high linguistic level and good knowledge of current affairs. Description of the Degree Programme
- Duration: 3 semesters
- 2 to 4 languages (see language combinations)
- Courses:
- Consecutive interpreting (from first semester) and simultaneous interpreting, including simultaneous interpreting with text (from second semester). Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting courses are taught through group lectures (for students with all language combinations) and smaller classes for specific language pairs (for example, for students interpreting from English to French).
- Parliamentary procedure, conference terminology and knowledge about the international organizations
- Interpreting theory and research
- Aspects of the profession (ethics, professional norms, recruitment)
- Supervised training (independent group training sessions regularly supervised by the Department assistants)
- Observing and putting into practice interpreting skills at the international organizations in Geneva: visits to international organizations (from first semester) that have an agreement with the University of Geneva, including the International Labour Organization, World Intellectual Property Organization and World Trade Organization; opportunity to practice in cabins with the microphones switched off from the second semester onwards
- Master's dissertation and viva (research paper supervised by a member of the Department's teaching staff)
- Courses with in-house interpreters from the European Union institutions
