Sustainability in the Subtitling Industry: A Netflix Case Study
Tinka Stössel began her career with a BA in Modern Languages (German and French) from Texas A&M University and worked for several years as a translator in a Munich-based patent law firm before continuing her studies with an MA in Cultural and Cognitive Linguistics at the Ludwig Maximilian’s University in Munich. During her MA, she worked as a student assistant in the Elysée-Preschools project associated with the Franco-German Friendship, and the Bahamas component of the International Corpus of English project. In 2021, she began her role as research assistant in the German Unit and editorial assistant for the translation studies journal Parallèles. Her current main research focus is on audiovisual translation with a doctoral dissertation on sustainability in Netflix’s subtitling process from the viewpoint of subtitlers with German as a target language. She is also part of the research team in the project “The subtitling ecosystem: A workplace study of roles, interactions, and resources”, which investigates subtitling in the context of a bilingual Swiss TV channel. | |
