On the occasion of his retirement, Professor Yves Flückiger will present his passion for labor economics and wage discrimination at a Farewell Symposium titled “Issues in the Labor Market.”
During this symposium, various speakers, including former research colleagues and doctoral students of Yves Flückiger, will take the stage to present their work covering topics such as international trade, labor economics, and industrial organization.

Biography
Yves Flückiger is a prominent Swiss academic and administrator with an extensive background in economics and higher education leadership. He holds a degree in Sociology as well as a doctorate in Economics from the University of Geneva.
He has been a Professor at the University of Geneva since 1992, focusing on labor economics, industrial organization, and public finances. He was appointed Rector of the University of Geneva from 2015 to 2024. He was also President of Swissuniversities from 2020 to 2023, and President of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) from 2022 to 2023. As of January 2024, he became the President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences.
Flückiger’s academic career includes research fellowships at prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Oxford, as well as visiting professorships at universities in Fribourg, Lausanne, and Australia’s Deakin University. He has authored numerous books and over 120 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, primarily focusing on labor economics, migration, wage discrimination, and education economics. In addition to his academic work, Flückiger has served in various advisory roles, including as a member of the Swiss Competition Commission from 1996 to 2007 (Vice-President from 2003 to 2007) and as a scientific advisor to the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research from 1998 to 2008.
As the new President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, Flückiger aims to foster trust between science and society, addressing challenges in Swiss science, relations with Europe, and working conditions at universities. In 2023, he was decorated with the French Légion d’Honneur.
