GSEM graduate turned professor at Columbia University, Dr. Marco Avella will present his work at an upcoming Research in Statistics Seminar

Dr. Marco Avella Medina will be the guest speaker at the Research Seminar in Statistics on Friday, December 17. After graduating from the GSEM with a Bachelor's degree in Economics, a Master's degree in Statistics, and a Ph.D. in Statistics, Dr. Avella returns to his alma mater to share his research aimed at developing statistical inference tools that respect confidential data protection constraints.

Based on his recent paper, "Differentially private inference via noisy optimization", his presentation will focus on noisy optimization and robust statistics as pillars of a theory that allows for rigorous data analysis while respecting the anonymity of the individuals in the data being studied.

After obtaining his Ph.D. at the GSEM in 2016, Dr. Marco Avella obtained a postdoctoral position at MIT. Since 2018, he has been an assistant professor at Columbia University, New York. His work has been published in leading journals, including the Journal of the American Statistical Association and Biometrika.
