Prof. Katarzyna Wac is a Computer Scientist at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Wac leads the Quality of Life Technologies lab, researching how emerging sensor/actuator-based mobile and wearable technologies can be leveraged for a personalized assessment of the individual’s behavior and Quality of Life (QoL), as they unfold naturally over time and in context, and improvement of the latter. Her research also includes understanding and modeling human factors influencing the acceptance of these technologies in everyday life, in turn influencing the collected data quality. To date, her lab has researched ways of assessing and modeling an individual’s mobility, including physical activity and public transportation usage, sleep quality and quantity, stress, physical safety and security (via an intimacy perception), and productivity patterns. Her research appears in more than 170 peer-reviewed proceedings and high-impact journals in computer science, human-computer interaction, and health informatics (including the “Nature Digital Medicine” journal), and in 2018 she co-edited a book on Digital Health, while in 2022, a book titled “Quantifying Quality of Life.” She is a (co)-PI in several European (including competitive H2020), Swiss National Science Foundation projects, and Stanford Medicine projects. She contributes to the ITU European Regional Initiative for mHealth. In 2015 she was a TEDMED Research Scholar. She is also a Senior Member of IEEE and ACM.
