Eligibility

• All students with a University of Geneva Master in Economics specializing in Econometrics are directly eligible.
• All students with a Master in Economics from a recognized university with an adequate econometrics or quantitative content are also eligible.
• Motivated students with other master’s degrees from a recognized university are also strongly encouraged to apply and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Note: In some cases, candidates may be asked to complete an appropriate preliminary program of advanced econometrics courses to fulfil the prerequisite.

Notice

The Institute of Management advertises Ph.D. positions on the University website and on other online job exchanges when they become available. There is no fixed application period. Unsolicited applications will not be considered.

Formal Admission Process

Ph.D. applicants who have received a preliminary job offer from the Institute of Management must submit a formal application package to the Scientific Committee. The GSEM’s Dean makes the final acceptance decision.

Step 1: The candidates must send the following documents by email to phd-gsem(at)unige.ch, with the subject: “Application for Ph.D. program in Management, your First Name, your Family Name”:

• A letter from their Ph.D. supervisor at the Institute of Management;
• A motivation letter mentioning the specialization in Management;
• Their CV;
• A copy of their diplomas;
• If available a certified copy of their bachelor and master exam transcripts.

The Scientific Committee processes the applications and sends the applicants a preliminary notification.

Step 2: Candidates who have received a favorable preliminary notification should send a hard copy of the following to:

• If the candidates are not yet registered at the GSEM:

The DASE evaluates the package and then sends it to the GSEM. In turn, the GSEM submits the package to the Scientific Committee, who formally advise the Dean. Based on this advice, the Dean decides to accept or reject the application.

Decision of the Scientific Committee

The Scientific Committee evaluates the applications and sends its decision to the Dean, indicating the specific modalities (co-requisites, doctoral program etc.) the candidates must satisfy.

The Dean makes the final decision and notifies the applicants of his decision by mail and, where appropriate, of the specific procedures they need to follow.

The University of Geneva is a partner of the Swiss Finance Institute (a private foundation created by Switzerland's banking and finance community in cooperation with leading Swiss universities). As such, the GFRI’s research and activities are aligned with those that the SFI undertakes. Moreover, its doctoral education is integrated into the SFI doctoral program in Finance and its professors are all affiliated with the Swiss Finance Institute.

The Swiss Finance Institute PhD Program in Finance targets academic excellence by providing an intellectual environment and curriculum comparable with the top Ph.D. programs in Europe and North America. The Ph.D. program is taught at the three Swiss Finance Institute campuses in Geneva/Lausanne (Léman), Lugano, and Zurich.

The curriculum comprises two phases: a preparatory year of intensive coursework followed by three years of advanced studies and research. The Ph.D. program covers a wide range of subjects, including Economics, Financial Economics, Corporate Finance, Mathematical Finance, and Econometrics. All courses are taught by internationally renowned academics from Switzerland, Europe, and North America. The curriculum offers the ideal framework for inspiring and successful Ph.D. studies in Finance.

The applicants should have a strong interest in research activities and the desire to pursue an academic career or a finance research career within the public or private sectors. Ideally, an applicant's academic record should include a solid background in Economics and Financial Mathematics, although if lacking a prerequisite course could be taken at the beginning of the Ph.D. program.
