Workshop - Health in the City
From 25 to 26 June 2024, Prof. Claudine Burton-Jeangros from the Institute of Sociological Research at the University of Geneva organized a workshop on "HEALTH IN THE CITY - EXPLORING URBAN HEALTH FROM A SOCIAL SCIENCES PERSPECTIVE." This project, initiated under the 4EU+ framework, was realized in cooperation with the University of Milan and Charles University.
Open to students, scholars, and the public, the workshop aimed to deepen knowledge exchange and foster conversations around pressing urban health challenges from a social sciences perspective.
The first day kicked off with a keynote speech by Prof. Judith Green from the University of Exeter, followed by sessions where experts fromvarious universities shared insights on topics such as “Health Inequalities, Lifestyle, and Urban Environment,” “Knowledges, Design, and Representations of Health,” and “Communities, Local Health, Participation, and Health Systems.” After a packed day of speeches, presentations, and lively discussions, the event concludedits first day with a convivial aperitif gathering for participants.
On Day 2, the focus shifted to “Urban Design and Green Spaces,” where the audience learned about the significant role that social sciences play in developing a green city. Another key theme was “Social Determinants of Health, Marginalization, and Social Practices.” During this session, experts disucssed healthcare systems and practices for migrants and marginalized groups, presenting preliminary research results from an action research in primary health care.
We extendour gratitude to all participants and contributors for their valuable insights and look forward to future collaborations.
