Ruey-Lin Chang est papyrologue et collabore au projet FNS n° 212424 “Greek documentary papyri: from architecture to periodization” sous la direction de Paul Schubert. En équipe avec Elisa Nury et Gianluca Bonagura, il travaille sur la typologie des papyrus grecs de l’Égypte byzantine (IV^e au VII^e s. ap. J.-C.), en se penchant plus particulièrement sur la matérialité du support. Les résultats de cette recherche collective seront mis à la disposition de la communauté scientifique grâce à notre plateforme Grammateus, déjà bien élaborée par Paul Schubert, Lavinia Ferretti, Susan Fogarty et Elisa Nury.

Ruey-Lin Chang s’intéresse également aux rapports entre texte et contexte de découvertes textuelles, entre papyrologie et archéologie. Il dirige à Philadelphie, antique agglomération urbaine du Fayoum d’où proviennent les fameuses archives de Zénon d’époque ptolémaïque, une opération de terrain de l’Institut français d’archéologie orientale du Caire (IFAO). Cette opération, qui explore la partie ville du site, est également soutenue par l’UMR 7044 Archimède / Université de Strasbourg, ainsi que par le Département des sciences de l’Antiquité de l’Institut autrichien d’archéologie (ÖAI).

À partir d’une multitude de fragments de papyrus conservés à la Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg, Ruey-Lin Chang a remonté trois rouleaux fiscaux d’époque romaine (sous Trajan), dont il a publié une première moitié (voir ci-dessous la liste des publications, Chang 2014) et prépare encore l’édition de la seconde partie. Ce travail découle de sa thèse sous la direction d’Andrea Jördens et de Jean Gascou. D’autre part, il est membre du programme d’étude de l’IFAO « Edfou au VIIe siècle » sous la direction d’Anne Boud’hors et d’Alain Delattre et qui porte sur l’édition des archives multilingues du pagarque Papas.

Après avoir mené des recherches à l’University College London sur l’Oxyrhynchus Papyri Project sous la direction notamment de Nikolaos Gonis, à l’IFAO en tant que membre scientifique et à l’Académie autrichienne des sciences en collaboration avec Thomas Kruse, Ruey-Lin Chang s’est consacré pendant 5 ans à l’enseignement des sciences de l’Antiquité (surtout hellénisante) au sein du département d’histoire à la National Taiwan University (en mandarin et en anglais) en tant que professeur assistant. Il est collaborateur scientifique à l’Université de Genève depuis février 2023.

Ruey-Lin Chang is a papyrologist and collaborates for the SNSF project n°212424 “Greek documentary papyri: from architecture to periodization” headed by Paul Schubert. In a team with Elisa Nury and Gianluca Bonagura, he works on the typology of the Greek papyri from Byzantine Egypt (4^th-7^th cent. CE), focussing in particular on the materiality of the medium of writing. The research results will be made available to the scholarly community, thanks to our digital platform Grammateus which has already been well developed by Paul Schubert, Lavinia Ferretti, Susan Fogarty and Elisa Nury.

Ruey-Lin Chang is also interested in the relations between texts and contexts of texual finds, between papyrology and archaeology. He leads an archaeological mission, on behalf of the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo (IFAO), at Philadelphia, the ancient urban agglomeration in the Fayyum, where the famous Zenon archive papyri dated to the Ptolemaic period are from. This mission investigates the urban settlement of the site, and is also supported by the UMR 7044 Archimède / University of Strasbourg, as well as the Department of Classical Studies of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI).

Ruey-Lin Chang reconstructed three Roman tax rolls (dated to the reign of Trajan) from numerous papyrus fragments housed at the National and University Library (BNU) of Strasbourg. He has published half of them (see below, list of publications, Chang 2014) and prepares the edition of the second half, as the sequel of his doctoral thesis supervised by Andrea Jördens and Jean Gascou. He is also a member of the research programme at the IFAO “Edfu in the 7^th century”, aimed at editing the multilingual archive papyri of Papas the pagarch and of which Anne Boud’hors and Alain Delattre are principal investigators.

After his research activities at the Univeristy College London for the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Project under the principal investigation of Nikolaos Gonis, at the IFAO as one of its research fellows and at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Thomas Kruse, Ruey-Lin Chang dedicated himself for 5 years to teaching in English and in Mandarin Chinese the sciences of the (mostly Hellenized) Antiquity, at the Department of Hisotry of the National Taiwan University as an assistant professor. He is a scientific collaborator at the University of Geneva from February 2023 onwards.
