| Description | Datives are very diverse across languages. They can be prepositional or suffixal. They can be monomorphemic or polymorphemic. In some languages, they express only the dative, in other languages, they may be used in other functions, e.g., to mark Locations in some languages, or Goals in others. This versatility has led some linguists to abandon the idea that language categories may have a universal basis. In our talk, we argue against this position. We show that the structure underlying Datives cross-linguistically is invariant and argue that the observed differences can be attributed to the shape and the size of the entries languages have in their lexicon.
