Titre Deriving mismatches in ATB-movement: Asymmetric extraction + ellipsis
Conférencier Martin Salzmann (U. Leipzig)

Description

In my talk, I will address the syntax of ATB-movement as in (i):

(i). Which book did [John like __] and [Mary dislike __]?

There are two major challenges posed by the construction:
a. How is it possible to extract a constituent from two conjuncts simultaneously?
b. How can one derive the single identity reading ((i) questions a single object)?

I will argue in favor of an approach that involves asymmetric extraction from the first conjunct and deletion in the second. Evidence for asymmetric extration will come from ATB-configurations that combine movement and binding chains. Evidence for ellipsis will come from morphological and reconstruction asymmetries showing that only the first conjunct contains a perfect copy of the extractee while the second conjunct allows for certain mismatches (vehicle change effects).
