I will discuss the pragmatic and syntactic conditions that regulate the pre-/post- verbal
placement of subjects in Romanian, providing an answer to the following issues: (i) Are there
preverbal subjects which are neither topics nor foci? (ii) Why, although Romanian is
syntactically VSO (in that the subject does not raise for case reasons, but can always be
licensed in a postverbal position), are SV orders so widespread, compared to strict VSO
languages such as Celtic? (iii) In what conditions must the subject be postverbal in a thetic
clause? The discussion will also address the difference between all-new clauses and thetic
clauses, and the conditions for topicalization.
