In this talk, I discuss the notion of epistemic commitment as the basis for knowledge and belief. I will characterize both as veridical. The criterion for epistemic commitment is veridicality in a modal space, and this explains, I will argue, the distribution of indicative mood with verbs of knowledge and belief. The subjunctive arises when we have a nonveridical epistemic space, and I will illustrate the case with epistemic modals, the future modality, and verbs of volition— which, I argue, also have an epistemic basis. The languages of Illustration will be Greek, English, Italian, and French.
