In this presentation, based on joint work with Despina Oikonomou and Fenia Karkaletsou, I will examine the morpho-syntactic and semantic properties of double comparatives (DCs), e.g., more louder, in Greek and in English focusing on their differences from regular Single Comparatives (SCs, synthetic and analytic). Evidence will be presented that DCs in contrast with SCs are always evaluative (in the sense of Rett 2008) as part of their meaning, i.e. DCs involve comparison among degrees which exceed the contextual standard. The evaluativity inference of DCs will be captured by adopting a more complex syntactic analysis of DCs, building on Corver (1997), Caha (2016), de Clercq & Wyngaerd(2017), Sauerland & Alexiadou (2020), and contra Corver (2005), Bobaljik(2012).
