Description

Recent work on responses to affirmations and polar questions leads to a lot of interesting works,
including Farkas and Bruce (2009), Lipták (2013), Holmberg (2016), and Wiltschko (2018)
among others. Cantonese features briefly in some discussion concerning the true-based system
versus the positive/negative system. In this talk, I present data showing that the Cantonese system
is more complex than previously presented. After illustrating the variety of responses, as
well as the variety of yes-no questions, I zoom in on verbal echo answers and argue that there
is verb-stranding ellipsis in Cantonese. I discuss how this relates to Landau’s (2020) restriction
on constraining head-stranding ellipsis.
