In situ wh-interrogatives in French: a fresh perspective on an old debate (joint work with Lena Baunaz)

In the last five decades, French wh-in situ questions have been the centre of much work in theoretical linguistics. Nonetheless, scholars still disagree on the distribution of these constructions, and on their interpretation. Is wh-in situ presuppositional, strongly presuppositional, or not necessarily so? The question has been debated for years, but it might not be the right one to ask. In this work, we study the ESLO 1 and 2 corpora of spoken French through an innovative lens, that of ‘activation’ (Dryer 1996, Larrivée 2019, Garassino 2022). We thus provide a novel understanding of the contexts in which these structures are licenced, and how they have evolved over time.
