Description

Optionality of V3 in Romansh varieties

In this presentation, we discuss the ability of a set of lexical entries, e.g. tout in üna vouta ‘suddenly’ and uossa ‘then’ (Samo 2022: 158–163), in triggering V2 and V3 orders (cf. also Grünert 2019) in the Romansh varieties of Putèr and Vallader. We extract our data from a heterogeneous group of available sources (folktales, newspaper, social media).

Our data support the hypothesis that there is no “pure” optionality (see also Samo & Si 2022): the strongest hypothesis is that when the adverbial is fronted in a V2 environment the item is topicalized/focussed, while in V3 environment the adverbial moves to a dedicated position for “highlighted” adverbials ModP(Rizzi 2004) rather than being generated in a position higher than the Left Periphery (cf. it can only precede subjects in V3 environments).
