Description

Pied-piping prepositional relatives vs. alternative strategies in Italian and English:

complexity, acquisition, and processing

Anna Cardinaletti (with Veronica Bressan)

The talk compares Italian and English restrictive relative clauses built on prepositional complements. In both languages, pied-piping prepositional relatives belong to the formal registers and are acquired late. In colloquial registers, alternative constructions are used which differ syntactically depending on the specific properties of the two languages, namely resumptive and preposition-stranding relatives, respectively. Both are claimed to be simpler than pied-piping relatives. We discuss their structural properties as well as the L1 acquisition data and the processing data available for the two languages. Doubling relatives and null-preposition relatives will also be included in the discussion.
