Background

I am a medical doctor specializing in neurology. I completed my PhD in neuroscience at the University of Geneva from 2012-2016. From 2016-2022, I trained in neurology at Geneva University Hopsitals, including further training in epileptology and sleep medicine. I then moved to University College London (UCL, United-Kingdom) for my post-doc at the laboratory of Prof. Matthew C Walker. I have been recently appointed Associated Editor at Brain Communications and have been awarded a Guarantors of Brain fellowship to pursue research in the UK for 12 months.

Projects at Prof. Vulliémoz’s group

While training in clinical neurology, I completed two research projects with Prof. Vulliémoz’s team on the interaction between epilepsy and sleep. In the first project, we showed that interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) occur during vulnerable time periods characterized by enhanced slow oscillatory activity. In the second project, we established that several sleep-related electrophysiological biomarkers, such as slow waves and spindles, are asymmetrically expressed in patients with focal epilepsy. These works offer mechanistic insights into the generation of IEDs, clarify the interaction between sleep and epileptic networks and open the perspective of using sleep recording to help the topographical investigation of epilepsy.

Current projects

I am currently a honorary research fellow at UCL, working in the laboratory of Prof. Matthew C Walker. My work focuses on the interaction between slow waves and IEDs. My main aim is to clarify the interplay between network excitability, slow waves and epileptic activity.
