Is life without insulin possible?

With her project entitled "Is it possible to live without insulin?", Giulia Lucibello, PhD student in the laboratory of Prof. Roberto Coppari has won the highly competitive Booster competition .

Type 1 diabetes affects tens of millions of people worldwide. While looking for ways to control the metabolism of diabetics without the need for insulin, the research team identified the highly promising S100A9 protein. The aim of Giulia Lucibello's thesis is to identify which cells this protein needs to exert its beneficial effects in order to restore the quality of life and longevity of people with type 1 diabetes.
