(Future) parents follow the guide!

Parenthood and all related issues require a community. This guide is for members of the University of Geneva – staff and students – who are parents or planning to become parents, as well as their superiors or academic supervisors.

Medical matters

In Switzerland, the Federal Act on Health Insurance (LAMal) guarantees coverage of various services.

During pregnancy: Seven routine check-ups and two ultrasounds (one between the 10th and 12th week, the other between the 20th and 23rd week); for high-risk pregnancies, as many check-ups as needed; if you follow a birthing class with a midwife, CHF 100 is covered.

During childbirth: All costs are covered, whether in hospital, at home, or as an outpatient.
After childbirth: One check-up and three breastfeeding support sessions are covered.
Additional costs, such as giving birth in a private clinic, may be covered if you have private or semi-private insurance. Be careful however, as private or semi-private coverage for pregnancy generally only enters into force after two years of subscription.
