Juliette Françoise

Juliette Françoise is completing a joint PhD at the University of Geneva and the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne under the co-supervision of Pilar Nogues-Marco and Anne Conchon. She is also a teaching assistant at the University of Geneva.

She is interested in the monetary history of the early modern French Empire, with a particular focus on the French presence in Asia. Her thesis examines the nature and the effects of the French state’s provision of liquidity to finance trade and war overseas and to administrate and rule the settlements it conquered or acquired in Asia during the eighteenth century. Her research also explores the monetization of the imperial peripheries and some of its key features notably money plurality and colonial hyperinflation. She seeks to rethink the formation and functioning of France’s overseas empire in Asia through the lens of money.

She held a Master’s degree in early modern Economic History from the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a MSc in Economics with reference to the Asia Pacific Region from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London. She also studied at the École normale supérieure of Paris and obtained the agrégation d’histoire in 2021.
