Sophie Martin joins the Molecular and Cellular Biology department
Sophie Martin is a cell biologist studying fundamental principles of cell polarization and cell fusion. She completed her PhD in the group of Prof D. St Johnston at the Wellcome/CR UK Gurdon Institute studying the molecular mechanisms of cell polarization and mRNA localization in Drosophila. Following a postdoc on the role of the cytoskeleton in cell polarization in the fission yeast in the laboratory of Prof F. Chang at Columbia University in New York, she joined the Center for Integrative Genomics at UNIL as a SNSF Professor in 2007. She was appointed Associate Professor in 2010 and Full Professor in 2018 at the Department of Fundamental Microbiology (UNIL), of which she was the director between 2020 and 2022.
She received numerous awards (2009 EMBO Young Investigator; 2012 WICB Junior Award from the American Society for Cell Biology;2014 Friedrich Miescher award and EMBO Gold medal) and was elected EMBO member in 2020. Her lab is currently supported by a third consecutive ERC grant.
On February 1, 2023, she will join the Molecular and Cellular Biology department. The Section of biology warmly welcomes her and her team members!
