Tatu Kumpulainen was born in 1985 in Kuopio, Finland. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in 2010 at the Tampere University of Technology while working in the group of Prof. Helge Lemmetyinen. He obtained a PhD in chemistry in 2015 at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, in the group of Prof. Fred Brouwer. The PhD work was awarded the HRSMC Dick Stufkens prize for the best PhD thesis in 2015. After obtaining the PhD, he moved to University of Geneva, Switzerland, where he worked as a post-doctoral researcher during 2015–2017 in the group of Prof. Eric Vauthey. From 2018 he was an Ambizione fellow at the Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Geneva. Since October 2020, he works as a senior lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä where he is setting up a research group focusing on studies on excited-state proton-transfer reactions in liquid phase and heterogeneous media.
