A Warm Welcome to the Faculty of Science

On October 2, the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Science hosted the very first "FacSci Welcome Day", an initiative aimed at bringing together recently appointed professors to introduce them to the institution and foster a dynamic networking environment. Designed to go beyond a standard orientation session, this event offered new faculty members the opportunity to discover available resources and meet colleagues from the Faculty's eight sections and independent departments.

Held at Sciences II, the event provided newcomers with a deeper understanding of the University's academic culture and organizational structure. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, from research priorities to teaching strategies, reflecting the Faculty's commitment to excellence in both areas.

The newly appointed professors, who come from diverse academic backgrounds, also explored the importance of interdisciplinary work. In a Faculty where over 300 teachers and 2000 students collaborate across various sections and departments, integration is a significant challenge but also a key priority. This event created an ideal setting for establishing these initial connections.

While many are recognized for their specialized expertise, the emphasis on collaboration seeks to overcome barriers between sections and departments. Informal exchanges, organized around refreshments, facilitated discussions on research interests, teaching approaches, and opportunities for cooperation.

During the event, presentations highlighted the numerous resources available to faculty members. From grant application support to cutting-edge laboratory facilities, the program skillfully combined inspiration with practicality, both essential for their integration into the Faculty.

Presentations from structures such as the Research Support Office, the Legal Service, and the Library showcased the practical tools available to support their activities. These sessions offered valuable insights into navigating research funding, understanding institutional policies, and leveraging library services for teaching and research. The intervention by the Equality Diversity Commission (Faculty of Science) and the Equality and Diversity Service (Rectorat) also underscored the Faculty's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment.

The event also highlighted a key component of the Faculty's mission: putting science at the service of society. This ambition resonated throughout the discussions, which emphasized the university's crucial role in addressing real-world challenges. The newly appointed professors were encouraged to consider how their work could contribute to these priorities while exploring opportunities for collaboration with local and international partners.

At the close of the event, participants left with practical tools to better understand the Faculty's operations and a clearer vision of its priorities. While the day served only as an introduction, it laid the groundwork for future collaboration and integration.

For the new professors, the future promises both exciting opportunities and high expectations. They are invited to enrich their respective disciplines through their expertise while contributing to the vibrancy of the academic ecosystem. Their journey at the Faculty of Science begins here — not as an isolated endeavor, but as part of a collective and thoughtful progression.
