Curiosity, creativity and science go hand in hand. I am interested in the dynamics of the Earth and their interaction with the environment and society. My current research focuses on the physical processes associated with the life cycle of volcanic ash and their long-term impacts.

My main interests include the characterisation of tephra deposits and volcanic particles, volcanic and aeolian phenomena, impact and risk assessments, evaluation of multiple dimensions of vulnerability including social, economic and cultural aspects. I am also interested in sustainable development strategies concerning both natural resource exploitation (i.e., mineral resources) and natural (i.e., volcanic and tsunami) and human induced-risk assessment and management. As well as employing traditional geological and geomatics methods in all of these lines of work, I am actively exploring the use of tools including data mining, machine learning, geostatistics and citizen science to comprehensively analyse Earth systems and data.

Research topics

  • Natural hazards (volcanic, tsunami, erosion)
  • Impact and risk assessments and management
  • Mining exploration and human-induced impacts
  • Advanced GIS methods applied to natural sciences
