Short course

A) Ore dressing
Dr. Rainer Lehne, Heidelberg

B) Environmental Geochemistry of Mine Waste Management
Dr. Bernhard Dold, Lausanne

Genève 20-22 March 2002
salle 201, 9.00-17.00

Open pit mining

Open pit mining with (below, from left to right) flotation cell, gold and copper concentrate, and acid mine drainage (AMD)

A) Ore dressing (Dr. Rainer Lehne, Heidelberg) Wednesday 20 and morning of Thursday 21
- Gold ores and their metallurgical treatment (gravity concentration, amalgamation, flotation, and leaching techniques)
- Microscopy of gold ores with regard to their treatment (practical exercises)
- Base metal ores and their beneficiation (principles and mechanisms of mineral flotation)
- Specific tasks of ore microscopy in mineral dressing
- Microscopy of base metal ores and milling products (practical exercises)

B) Environmental Geochemistry of Mine Waste Management (Dr. Bernhard Dold, University of Lausanne), afternoon of Thursday 21 and Friday 22
The short course focuses on the geochemical reactions associated with the management of wastes from mining and milling operations. Topics will include a review of aquatic chemistry, a summary of the environmental geochemistry of ore deposits, chemical and biological transformations in mine and mine waste environments, and application of these principles to understanding water quality problems in tailings disposal facilities, pit lakes, waste rock piles, and mine drainage. Special attention will be directed towards addressing problems associated with acid solutions resulting from mining activities in sulfide formations.

Registration by e-mail to miner@terre.unige.ch until March 14, 2002. Places limited (15).

Note: Ce "short course" se substitue au cours de 4e année de l'ELSTE "Traitement de minerais et problèmes environnementaux"
