Insurances

Health insurance is legally required for all persons residing in Switzerland (e.g. B permit, education, etc.). Please read below all the information that concerns you.

For more information about insurance in Switzerland, please visit the dedicated page of the Social Office or write to us at sante(at)unige.ch.

If you have a B permit, you must declare your health insurance to the Service des assurances maladie (SAM).

It is essential to have Swiss health insurance to work in Switzerland. Just one hour of activity, even temporary, requires you to have Swiss health insurance.

Health insurance

If you are domiciled in Switzerland:

  • For non‑EU nationals with a B permit: you can choose a Swiss student health insurance (e.g. ScoreStudies, etc.). This health insurance will allow you, if necessary, to work in Switzerland.
  • For EU / EFTA nationals with a B permit for education:
    • Students who are not gainfully employed in Switzerland: can keep their European card or choose a Swiss student insurance (e.g. ScoreStudies, etc.). The European card does not allow you to work in Switzerland.
    • Students with gainful employment in Switzerland: obligation to choose a Swiss student health insurance (e.g. ScoreStudies, etc.).
  • For Swiss nationals: Swiss KVG insurance is compulsory.

If you are domiciled in France:

  • For non‑EU nationals: see with the French authorities.
  • For EU/EFTA nationals: the European card is accepted; see the French authorities. However, if you are gainfully employed in Switzerland, you will have frontier status and the choice between the French CMU or the Swiss LAMal (see your employer).
  • For Swiss nationals: check with the French authorities. However, if you are gainfully employed in Switzerland, you will have the choice between the French CMU or the Swiss LAMal (check with your employer).
