Prevention

risks due to on-screen work

GENERAL RISKS

On-screen work generates most of the time a prolonged seated position, that can contribute cause :

  • Diabetes
  • Heart diseases
  • Cancers
  • Inflammations
  • Mental illnesses
  • Cirulatory problems increasing the risk of falls
  • A barrier to mobility
  • Weakening of the joints
  • Loss of muscle mass.

More specifically, pain caused by on-screen work mainly affects :

  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Lower back
  • Upper back
  • Upper limbs : hands, wrists, and even elbows.

It is also important to note that these effects are independent of the level of physical activity. Indeed, regular physical activity cannot compensate for these negative consequences, but only help to attenuate them.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD)

On-screen work implies prolonged and restrictive statical sedentary postures that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders, characterized by soft tissue damage such as :

  • Muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments
  • Blood vessels, bursae and cartilage

MSDs can be detected following the onset of symptoms such as pain/discomfort, numbness and/or tingling, loss of flexibility and/or strength. They are also influenced by psychosocial risk factors such as high time pressure, lack of social support, lack of autonomy and participation, and value conflicts.

Most known types of MSDs are :

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendinopathy Bursitis, etc.

eye disorders

Prolonged screen time can encourage the onset of certain eye disorders, such as :

  • Visual fatigue (heavy eyes, tingling, blurred vision, etc.)
  • Headache
  • Ophthalmic migraines
  • Myopia
  • Dry eyes.

Sensorimotor Amnesia

When a muscle is under constant tension, it is inevitably subject to pain. Indeed, it is possible to lose sensory awareness and muscular control of certain parts of the body. This translates into the inability to feel which muscle is contracted and which is not
