Making the World - The first round the world tourist tours (1869-1914)

This research project, based at the University of Geneva in the Department of Geography and Environment of the Faculty of Social Sciences, is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). This transdisciplinary program will run for four years, from 2023 to 2027, and will bring together researchers from Switzerland, Europe, the United States and Japan to explore the history of the first tourist trips around the world. How did these first round-the-world tourist trips transform geographical imaginations? What role did these first globetrotters play in shaping the world?
