SUMMARY (Ridvan Askin, edited Deborah Madsen):
Together with Sarah S. Allen, James Madison Allen calls on “earnest, practical vegetarians and dress reformers” to establish a “'Hygienic' Group Home – on a new plan of domestic and general cooperation.” The idea is to form an “association” to counteract what the Allens perceive as a general state of “isolation” with "a new system of life … for the publication of books, pamphlets, periodicals, circulars, tracts, carts, diagrams, etc. relating to a Universal Scientific Alphabet, a simplified and rational Education, and a normal Socialism …; and for the development and administration of a practical, self-sustaining Home School, or Normal University, for both sexes and all ages" (3).
The goal is “the removal from the earth of disease, discord and misery, and the establishment of universal health, harmony and happiness; … universal peace, purity and contentment” (3). This is to be achieved by “peaceful, constructive, educative means” instead of “the sword and the butcher knife” (3). Tthe Allens envision an intersectional ethical veg*n community - they specify a “fruitarian” community - based on associationism and endorsing dress reform, spelling reform, and educational reform.
