Lovell, Mary Frances (1843-1932)

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Mary Frances Whitechurch was born in London, England, on 11 July 1843 and moved to the US in early 1849. She was a noted vegetarian, and anti-vivisectionist activist, who campaigned against the use of feathers, fur and other animal products in clothing.  With Caroline Earle White she co-founded the Women’s Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals  (WPSPCA) and co-founded (also with Caroline Earle White) the American Anti-Vivisection  Society (AAVS) in 1883. She was the Contributing Editor of the Journal of Zoöphily. She was also active in prison reform and was an active member of Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Mary Frances Lovell died in Philadelphia on 25 June 1932.
