The American Phrenological Journal

The American Phrenological Journal. 1839-1911.

The journal was established in 1838 in Boston, Massachusetts, by the brothers Lorenzo Niles Fowler and Orson Squire Fowler. Orson S. Fowler served as the editor of the journal during its early years, contributing articles that explain the principles and applications of phrenology. Due to the emphasis on individual improvement and advancement, phrenology intersected with multiple social justice issues, such as pacifism, Temperance, Women's Suffrage, and prison reform. Samuel R. Wells was the leading editor during the 1870s and the journal was published primarily by Fowler & Wells Company. The journal underwent periodical changes in title as well as editorship:
