The American Vegetarian and Health Journal

The American Vegetarian and Health Journal. Philadelphia: American Vegetarian Society, 1850-1854. 4 vols.

This journal is the off-shoot of the American Vegetarian Society and prominently features writings by William Alcott and Russell Thacher Trall, among others. Essays on the various arguments for being vegetarian and the dangers of meat-eating are supplemented with correspondence from long-time vegetarians such as Dr. Trall on their general good health. Authors frequently cite the connections between vegetarianism and moral or ethical issues, such as Temperance (very frequently) and Abolition, Pacifism and anti-militarism, opposition to capital punishment. Most issues conclude with a poem, often related to human cruelty to animals.
