Periodicals Bibliography
Douglass’ Monthly
Douglass’ Monthly. Ed. Frederick Douglass. Rochester, NY, 1858-1863. 5 vols.
The magazine format differs from the weekly newspaper style of his earlier publications, The North Star and Frederick Douglass' Paper, although the first seven issues were published as a supplement to Frederick Douglass' Paper. The magazine “focused primarily on the abolitionist cause, promoting anti-slavery sentiments and advocating for the rights of African Americans, and also went beyond - tackling women's rights, suffrage, and other matters of social justice” (https://coherentdigital.net/aanw#4).
NOTE: the Library of Congress catalog entry for this magazine indicates that “Vol. numbering irregular; Vol. 5, no. 3-6 repeated” (https://catalog.loc.gov/vwebv/holdingsInfo?searchId=9380&recCount=25&recPointer=1&bibId=11429443). Several URLs for Vol. V indicate an issue number that does not match that printed on the scanned texts. "In early June 1872, while Douglass was living in Washington, D.C., his Rochester home was destroyed in a devastating fire. All family members living there survived, but most of their belongings were lost, including sixteen volumes of The North Star, Frederick Douglass’ Paper, and Douglass’ Monthly. No complete collection of Douglass’ newspapers is known to exist, but this online collection greatly expands access to Douglass’ three weeklies" (https://www.loc.gov/collections/frederick-douglass-newspapers/about-this-collection/).
