Journal of Zoöphily

Journal of Zoöphily. Philadelphia, PA: American Anti-Vivisection Society and Women’s Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals, 1892-1919.

The journal's motto, appearing on the banner of every issue, was “He who is not actively kind is cruel.” Caroline Earle White founded the American Anti-Vivisection Society in 1883, with Mary Frances Lovell, and wrote extensively for the organization’s publication, Journal of Zoophily. Lovell, who was also active in the Women's Temperance movement, was associate editor of the publication. The focus of articles is animal experimentation and vivisection, vaccination, hunting, blood sports, fashion, conditions of animal agriculture, and animal labor. The journal promoted animal welfare and anti-vivisection advocacy, featuring articles and reports from prominent organizations and activists. The topics covered include the ethical treatment of animals in scientific research, the use of animals in sports and entertainment, and the importance of humane education.
