The Library of Health and Teacher on the Human Constitution

The Library of Health and Teacher on the Human Constitution.  Ed. William A. Alcott. Boston: Geo. W. Light, 1837-1843.

Continues The Moral Reformer and Teacher on the Human Constitution, also edited by William A. Alcott (Boston: Light & Horton, 1835-1836). The "Advertisement" of the journal makes this relation clear: "The Library of Health is designed to answer the precise purpose indicated by its title -- to supply, by a series of cheap yearly volumes, a fund of instruction in regard to the laws of the human body, which is no where else to be found, in a popular form.  To accomplish this end is not only the main purpose of this volume and the preceding two volumes under the title of the 'Moral Reformer,' but will be the purpose of all succeeding ones." The same description seeks to separate the work of the journal from that of Sylvester Graham: "Some of our readers appear to have imbibed the idea, that we hang all our hopes of promoting human health and longevity on a mere reformation in eating and drinking. Some also go farther, and seem to suppose us pledged, directly or indirectly, to sustain the views taught by Mr. Graham. Now let it be distinctly understood, once for all, that in this work we have nothing to do, either directly or indirectly, with Mr. G. or his doctrines" (n.pag.). The intersecting issues of dress reform, as well as conditions of air, temperature, and "the state of the mind" form the broader context within which questions of diet are to be explored in the journal.

A compilation of articles from volumes of the Library of Health, the Moral Reformer, and the Teacher of Health was published as a book, entitled The Library of Health, and Teacher on the Human Constitution (Boston: Published for the Author, 1849): https://archive.org/details/libraryofheal00alco
