The New England Anti-Vivisection Society was founded in 1895 by Caroline Earle White and in the same year began publishingThe New England Anti-Vivisection Society Monthly to advance the Society's core mission: to oppose vivisection, to promote alternatives to animal experimentation, and to raise awareness about the ethical concerns associated with experimentation on living animals. The journal published a range of materials, including poetry and fiction, extracts from lectures and discussions, reports, and position papers. From November 1900 the title changed to The Animals' Defender.
