Carouge, Student Housing and Sociability
2029 - The University of Geneva and the Fondation immobilière de la ville de Carouge are conducting an ambitious project combining housing, student accommodation, social gathering spaces, and sports facilities on the plot known as the "University" parcel. Located on the heights of Carouge, adjacent to the Battelle campus, it is surrounded by centuries-old oak trees that give it a strong identity and qualities that the project seeks to preserve. The site will therefore be entirely dedicated to soft mobility, with motorized individual transport maintained at its periphery. Building entrances will only be accessible to emergency vehicles and for moving purposes.
The project, which was the subject of an architecture competition in 2015, will provide over 490 rooms for student, 430 residential units, and community and sports facilities. The latter, to be built in the south-west corner of the plot, will mark the transition and connection between the existing built fabric and the new neighbourhood. The building permit application was accepted in 2021, but appeals are still pending.
